2017 Christmas Tour of Historic Sites
For the second year, the Mitchell County Historical Society is sponsoring a Christmas Tour of Historic Mitchell County sites. The date will be November 25th, the Saturday following Thanksgiving, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
This is your opportunity to visit significant structures and communities throughout the county and learn more about the history behind their doors.
Where We’re Going…
All our Sites for 2017 are at least a century old; they will include the historic Penland Post Office. The building was constructed in 1902 and has housed the Post Office since 1934, making it the oldest active postal facility in Mitchell County. In Huntdale, participants will tour the old Phin Peterson Store, a fixture in the community for many years, and see the former hotel and other historic structures. In Bakersville, we will tour the Historic Mitchell County Courthouse, plus check out two other Bakersville buildings steeped in history – the Greene Building, which has housed many businesses through the years, from a general store and parmacy to an Indoor Market, and the Blevins Building, which was once a movie theater and most recently Crimson Laurel Gallery. By popular demand, the English Inn in Spruce Pine (Brenda and Bill Sparks, owners) is back on the Tour again this year. Construction on the Inn began in the second half of the 18th century.
The cost to tour all the sites is $25, or $15 to tour any 3 sites. If purchased in advance, tickets will be $20 and $12. Tour participants may ride the Mitchell County Transportation van for an additional fee of $5 per person. You must reserve a seat prior to Saturday, November 25th. Please call the MCHS office at (828)688-4371.

Opened in 1907, the Historic Mitchell County Courthouse has been the enter of lots of history. From famous trials to where men marched off to war (and ghost stories too), the Courthouse has stories to share.
In the 1920s, the Blevins Building was a silent movie theater and later hosted a bowling alley, furniture store, and pool hall before it became an arts gallery. It is currently for sale.
Built in 1922 following the Great Bakersville Fire, the Greene Building has served as a drug store, general mercantile, and a furniture store, along with hosting doctor and dentist offices.
Phin Peterson Store
A classic general mercantile, the Thin Peterson Store continues to serve the Huntdale community.
