Liberty Hill Baptist Church members on Palm Sunday, April 12, 1908.

This notable photograph of the congregation of Liberty Hill Baptist Church was taken on April 12, 1908. The church was officially chartered in 1866, but had been meeting since the 1840’s. A log building with dirt floors was erected in the Estatoe Community near the intersection of Penland and Rabbit Hop Roads. The church moved to its present location in 1897. A small child, Myrtle Cox, was the first burial in the church cemetery that same year. A brick structure was constructed in 1926 with bricks made in five shades at a Rutherford County kiln. They were then shipped to Spruce Pine on the Clinchfield Railroad and brought to the site by wagon and mules.
