Harris High Senior Trip 1952

The May 1, 1952, issue of the Tri-County Newsreported on the 4-day visit the Senior Class of Harris High School in Spruce Pine made in April to Washington, D.C.  The highlight of the trip to the nation’s capital, they said, was visiting Clyde R. Hoey, US Senator from NC from 1945-1952, who reminded the young people of the “responsibility which will be theirs of keeping the US Government sound and fearful of God.”

The students packed a tremendous amount into their 4-day trip; besides the Capitol, they visited the Washington Monument, the Jefferson and Lincoln Memorials, the Supreme Court, the National Archives, the Bureau of Engraving and Printing, the Museum of Natural History, Smithsonian Institute, Mellon Art Gallery, Washington National Cathedral, Mt. Vernon, plus the airport and the zoo!
