Summer is the time for family reunions! This photo shows a reunion held in the Summer of 1950 at the home of Adam and Kate Pitman on Hawkins Branch Road. Those gathered are the descendants of Gilbert and Mary Turbyfill Pitman.
Gilbert Pitman was one of the 13 men killed by a blasting accident in a railroad tunnel near Altapass on May 11, 1907. He was 41 years old. His widow was left with eight children to raise, and Mary herself died in 1916 at only 51.
Seven of the eight Pitman children are in this photo: Richard (married Dicie McKinney), Blanche (married Ralph Willis), Rissie (married Clayton Gouge), Adam (married Kate Dellinger, Cora (married Arnold Duncan), Beatrice (married 1stRobert McKinney, married 2ndHerbert Young), and Minnie (married Will Gouge). Their sister Matilda Pitman Buchanan passed away in 1926.
