Governor Roy Cooper addresses a press conference on March 23, 2020

Changes have continued as the COVID-19 virus spreads throughout North Carolina. On this day, Governor Roy Cooper announced that by executive order he was banning gatherings of more than 50 people and ordering businesses with close personal contact, such as gyms, movie theaters, and nail salons to close by Wednesday, March 25. Also, Cooper also announced that public schools in North Carolina will remain closed until May 15.

Locally, Mitchell County government buildings have been closed to the general public effective this afternoon. County offices will continue to be open on a regular schedule, but individuals have to make an appointment to come in to meet with a department. This continues in effect until further notice.

There was more announced spread of the virus in the state and in Western North Carolina as is noted in our numbers.

We hope to have some reaction to the latest updates from local residents to post on the Times soon.
