More Photos of COVID-19 Response

The Corona Times – April 1, 2020

The Mitchell County Historical Society wants to give a big shoutout to Jacob Gortney, a first-year teacher in Mitchell County Schools. He has been snapping photos all around the county of closed signs and blocks due to the COVID-19 outbreak.

Today, we feature a second set of images from Jacob (along with the Walmart restrictions sign I mentioned in yesterday’s post) to document the increasing seriousness of the situation.

Jacob grew up in Bakersville and is passionate about history. He enjoys reading and studying local history. A 2015 graduate of Mitchell High,  Jacob attended UNC-Asheville and graduated in 2019 with a degree and history and 6-12 teaching licensure. He currently teaches in the alternative school at Mitchell High School.

Jacob notes: on March 25, Governor Cooper ordered all barber shops and salons to close at 5:00. On March 27, Governor Cooper issued a statewide lockdown with the exception for essential travel only. These images were taken around the time of those announcements.

Pleas eshare any photos or stories with us to include in the journal. More details (and the gallery) are below.

About the Numbers

You will note a series of numbers contained in the blog. They document the spread of virus through confirmed cases by the federal Centers for Disease Control and by the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services. These are the official totals provided by state and local government at the date of the post and do not include estimates or cases not confirmed by these agencies. This is our effort to provide an accurate gauge of confirmed virus spread as it continues during the pandemic.
