A COVID-19 Wedding

The Corona Times – April 28, 2020

NOTE: Making the best of a bad situation is not unique to COVID-19. A Mitchell County couple exchanged their vows and began their new lives in the midst of the pandemic.

Brandon and I got engaged the day I graduated from Western Carolina with my bachelor’s degree. Both of our families surrounded us when he got down on one knee and asked me to spend the rest of my life with him. Of course I said yes! This was a couple Saturdays before Christmas 2019, and the only times I heard the word “Coronavirus” had been on the news. At the time, China was the only region affected. I never gave it a second thought. Little did I know that what I then thought was something that would be blown over in a couple weeks, would in a few short months affect the entire world and change the way we live our lives. More importantly, I would never have thought that this virus would be the reason we would have to postpone our wedding.

Our original wedding date had been set for April 18th, 2020. We were to be married at 2 P.M. at Pine Branch Baptist Church in Spruce Pine surrounded by all of our closest family and friends. I had spent hours upon hours carefully planning out details, finding the perfect wedding gown, helping our bridesmaids and groomsmen find their attire, and so much more. The downstairs foyer of my parents’ home had been completely taken over by large storage crates full of wedding decorations, flowers, signs, etc. We were fully prepared for our special day. Both of us were getting excited, and we couldn’t wait for the day that we had planned for, for so long.

In early March, you couldn’t go anywhere without hearing “Coronavirus” or “Covid-19”. The virus had spread from China, and had made its way to the United States. It wasn’t long after that we began living in the days of a global pandemic. As an already anxious bride preparing for the day she’d dreamt of since she was a little girl, I began to worry about how serious this situation was, and if it would cause trouble with our wedding.

“You may kiss the bride.”

The night finally came where Brandon and I had to make a very tough decision and answer this question: Do we postpone our wedding?

The day we had planned for four months was in jeopardy. However, after many tears and prayers, we decided to postpone our wedding for a later date. No matter how many times we told people it was postponed, there was still a part of us that didn’t want to believe that April 18th wouldn’t be our wedding date. It was a date that had been engraved in our minds and that we had counted down to. Then we decided that this virus wasn’t a strong enough reason for us not to become married on our original date.

I married Brandon on April 18th, 2020 in a small private ceremony. While it wasn’t the wedding we planned on, it was just as perfect as any wedding day could be. We have set a new date for our ceremony, and we can’t wait to be able to celebrate twice surrounded by everyone we love.

About the Numbers

You will note a series of numbers contained in the blog. They document the spread of virus through confirmed cases by the federal Centers for Disease Control and by the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services. These are the official totals provided by state and local government at the date of the post and do not include estimates or cases not confirmed by these agencies. This is our effort to provide an accurate gauge of confirmed virus spread as it continues during the pandemic.
