Map of Mitchell County highlighting the community of Relief.
In 1870, Squire Peterson’s Store was the hub of this community where among other goods, “Hart’s Relief” was sold. This popular “medicinal” liquid’s principal ingredient was alcohol, thus many patrons enjoyed the “Relief”. The name stuck. The doors to the old country store closed in 1973 with the retirement of the last Postmaster, Mr. John W. Bradshaw. During it’s tenure, the Relief Post Office also assumed mail service for three other local post offices that closed down nearby….Poplar, NC, Street, NC and Tipton Hill, NC.
The elevation of Relief on the Toe River is 2,092 feet above sea level.
