Members of the Mitchell County Historical Society join together to preserve the history and heritage of Mitchell County. Through volunteering and financial assistance, they are active participants in advancing our mission to document and preserve the people, places, and events that weave the golden tapestry of our county’s history.
MCHS provides a yearly program series to the general public from April to September and a Veteran’s Day program in November. We also sponsor the yearly Apple Butter Festival in October, the Mitchell County History Bee (a competition for area schoolchildren) in March, Scan Days in different locations in the county, the Inez McRae Scholarship, and we participate in events throughout the year in different locations in the Tri-Counties (see the calendar for information on upcoming events).
The Society also maintains the Bakersville Historical Cemetery and is currently involved in preservation efforts with the Penland Cemetery in Bakersville. Other projects are in the works, with details being announced soon.
Members are very important to our Society. They are the lifeblood of the organization, generating program ideas, volunteering with our various projects, and helping locate and preserve the artifacts and stories that make Mitchell County’s history come alive.
Membership in the MCHS also provides a discount on items purchased through the MCHS Store (whose proceeds also go to fund our programs and projects), a quarterly newsletter, the MCHS refrigerator magnet, and access to online research databases available in our office located in the Historic Mitchell County Courthouse. Plus, you will be helping support the preservation of Mitchell County’s story for future generations.
