A “Good” Friday?

A “Good” Friday?

The Corona Times – April 10, 2020

So it’s Good Friday. A Good Friday like has not been seen in our times. COVID-19 shelter at home has been in place for weeks and we approach the holiday where special church services and other public events like Easter Egg hunts are common. With social distancing in place to help curb the spread of the virus, many of these activities have moved to virtual events. Church services have been radically changed over the weeks, with regular services being streamed by many churches via YouTube and Facebook while those attending the services are not allowed into the buildings. Our MCHS board chair, Rhonda Gunter, noted that she attended a Maundy Thursday service at her church that was drive-through where they did not leave their cars. The social media portals have links to virtual egg hunts and other activities that kids can participate in during the holiday weekend and, while the attempts are noble to give some sense of normalcy to Easter 2020, it has only served to reinforce the unique and sobering situation that we are in.

The number of cases and deaths continue to rise and measures to keep folks home and safe are being documented by organizations such as Unacast as being mostly ineffective. In fact, North Carolina overall continues to earn a D- (and Mitchell County gets an F) for citizen efforts to stay home, practice distancing, or undertaking nonessential travel. So, while efforts are being made to enforce these new realities on our social institutions, as a people, I really wonder how serious many folks are taking these reports from health officials. Let’s just hope that ignoring the messages of staying at home and avoiding contact with others doesn’t come back to haunt us in the future.

About the Numbers

You will note a series of numbers contained in the blog. They document the spread of virus through confirmed cases by the federal Centers for Disease Control and by the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services. These are the official totals provided by state and local government at the date of the post and do not include estimates or cases not confirmed by these agencies. This is our effort to provide an accurate gauge of confirmed virus spread as it continues during the pandemic.
