By the Numbers Explained

By the Numbers Explained

The Corona Times – April 9, 2020

by David Biddix

Today, I thought it might be a good idea to explain how we get the case numbers that we post on the blog each day and how they may differ from reports given in the media.

The numbers we give each day are provided by the Centers for Disease Control (cdc.gov) for the U.S. case numbers and deaths and the North Carolina Department of Health & Human Services (ncdhhs, gov). These numbers are often slightly lower than ones reported in the news media because they do not reflect immediate reports by health departments; those are only listed in the official state and U.S. numbers after being submitted by local health agencies which may lag by a day or two. Also, state numbers do not reflect individuals who have a different address than their location in North Carolina. For example, Macon County authorities had a case involving someone with a New York address in their borders. The case was not counted in North Carolina; rather it showed in the New York statistics.

In terms of Western North Carolina cases, they are based on one of the traditional geographical “breaks” that define the region. It is illustrated in the map below:

Map of North Carolina illustrating the region usaed for COVID-19 reports

Map illustrating the counties we are using in our WNC counts.

We include the following counties in our total: Alexander, Alleghany, Ashe, Avery, Buncombe, Burke, Caldwell, Catawba, Cherokee, Clay, Cleveland, Gaston, Graham, Haywood, Henderson,  Jackson, Lincoln, Macon, Madison, McDowell, Mitchell, Polk, Rutherford, Swain, Transylvania, Watauga, Wilkes, and Yancey.

We are also hoping that the number helps you track the progression of the virus as infects individuals in North Carolina and in our region.

About the Numbers

You will note a series of numbers contained in the blog. They document the spread of virus through confirmed cases by the federal Centers for Disease Control and by the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services. These are the official totals provided by state and local government at the date of the post and do not include estimates or cases not confirmed by these agencies. This is our effort to provide an accurate gauge of confirmed virus spread as it continues during the pandemic.
